About Our Community Theatre And all volunteers who make it happen

The first word we use to describe our brand of theatre is "community", and for good reason. Every single actor, director, producer, graphic artist, board member, stage manager, lighting director, sound engineer, and stage hand live in and around our mountaintop community and donate their precious free time to make live theatre come alive in Alleghany County, NC.

We try to make our plays and performances affordable so that everyone can attend. Don't have a dime? Volunteer to take tickets at the door and get in for free!

While most of our full stage productions take place at the Alleghany Community Auditorium (co-located at Sparta Elementary School), we also perform in a variety of venues throughout Sparta and the entire county. We've been known to put on a show in a church basement, an outdoor stage, and even a barn. Attend a show once, and you'll see it really doesn't matter where the play is located, because someone famous once said, "The play's the thing."

Right. We couldn't have said it better ourselves!

Our Players

All of our actors live and work in the local area. Aside from praise and applause, none of them are paid for their work. They all have regular jobs and live their lives, but when the lights are on and the stage is set, the passion starts to flow and anything is likely to happen!

Here are just a few of our current players:

Kevin Bennett Brant Burgiss 03

Lori Hirschy This gal can act!

Lori, a mild-mannered farmer and postal carrier in real life, becomes a whole 'nother person once she breaks a leg onstage. Lori's been a steady actor for ACT over the last couple of years, most recently starring in "Lizzie Borden of Fall River" as well as in "Twelve Angry Jurors."

Brant Burgiss The singing winemaker

Most recently Brant played Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol" and Mitch Albom in "Tuesdays With Morrie", but he's also known for his roles in musicals in Boone, North Wilkesboro, and West Jefferson.

Besides acting, Brant is a director and ACT's sound engineer.

Laura Kennedy Diva with a sharp tongue

Laura has been in several ACT shows, most recently as the murder victim in our murder mystery dinner theatre "Dinner at Eight, Dead by Nine".
